What is COPD?

Contact your doctor if you have symptoms of COPD.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that causes difficulty breathing and shortness of breath due to airflow blockage. Because airways in the lungs are blocked, normal breathing may take extra effort. Lung conditions associated with COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

If you experience shortness of breath, a chronic cough with or without mucus, and have a history of smoking or exposure to occupational dust and chemicals you should see your doctor for a medical evaluation and testing for COPD.COPD can be managed to keep you as active as possible.

Smoking is the main cause of COPD. Quitting smoking is the first step towards helping your lungs work better and is the most important improvement you can make in your overall health.

COPD is not a temporary disease - it will always be present with long-term effects. Although there is no cure for COPD, it can be managed and damage from the disease can be slowed. You and your doctor can take the necessary steps to treat your symptoms and keep you as active as possible.
