COPD
COPD: The Nation’s Fourth Leading Killer is Virtually Unknown
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, refers to two lung conditions - chronic bronchitis and emphysema—where air flow blockages make it difficult to breathe. Currently the fourth leading cause of death, COPD is expected to become the third leading cause by the year 2020.
RHAMC is currently working on a state-wide initiative to improve the care of those with COPD and to prevent and reduce the prevalence of the disease through the Illinois State Plan for Addressing COPD.
As apart of the state plan, RHAMC is pleased to announce the COPD Initiative - a comprehensive effort which aims to:
- Educate the public about COPD and the benefits of early detection.
- Identify people with COPD or those at risk by raising awareness of symptoms
- Develop educational materials and resources.
- Inform the healthcare community about the GOLD Standard of Care for COPD.
- Advance policies at the national, state and local levels.
- Communicate new research results that impact quality of life for those with COPD.

RHAMC actively advocates for increased funding for COPD research and supports legislation to provide Medicare coverage for pulmonary rehabilitation services and oxygen therapy for those living with COPD.
