Asthma

Learn about WORLD ASTHMA DAY 2008

Chicago is known for many things, our great food and architecture. Unfortunately, we are also known for being an epi-center for asthma. We lead the Nation is asthma deaths, emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Asthma is a life long chronic illness that effects the airways and lungs. With proper education and management asthma can be controlled and people with asthma should be able to live life the same as others. At the Respiratory Health Association we seek to help people with asthma achieve these goals. We have numerous programs and initiatives to help people with asthma. We believe an educated patient is the best patient.

School-based Education
We have asthma education programs for students, staff, parents and community members.

  • FAN for Youth is for children in grades 3rd- 6th.
  • FAN for Teens is for Children in grades 4th -12th.
  • Asthma Management is for adults giving care to someone with asthma.

Web-based Education

  • Winning with Asthma is a web-based asthma education program for coaches and PE teachers who want to learn how to recognize asthma and learn how to handle an asthma emergency. The program can be completed in about 35-45 minutes in the comfort of your home at a time/date convenient for you! Once successfully completed, the participant will receive a free clipboard pre-printed with the steps needed to handle an emergency in the field.

Community-based Education
The Respiratory Health Association has two community-based programs.

  • Addressing Asthma in Englewood program is funded by the Merck Childhood Asthma Network, inc. to help families living in the Englewood and West Englewood communities who have children with asthma. We have Community Health Educators who will work with a family in their home. We help reduce and eliminate asthma triggers in their homes and provide much needed tools to assist with this. We also do asthma education with the caregiver and child in their home.
  • Controlling Asthma through Pediatric Care Collaborations is funded by the Illinois Department of Public Health and in partnership with the Chicago Asthma Consortium to help families of children living in the Chicago communities of Auburn Gresham, Woodlawn, Greater Grand Crossing and South Shore. We have trained Community Health Educators who will work with a family in their home. We help reduce and eliminate asthma triggers in their homes and provide much needed tools to assist with this. We also do asthma education with the caregiver and child in their home. To enroll in the program, please contact Stacy Ignoffo at (312) 628-0205.
