RHA Remembers Dr. David W. Cugell
Dr. David W. Cugell, an esteemed director emeritus of Respiratory Health Association, died December 5, 2016, at the age of 93.
Dr. Cugell was a 50+ year volunteer with RHA, continuing his advocacy well after his board service here ended. Dr. Cugell had a special interest in climate change and lung health, and in recent years had been a key supporter of RHA efforts in this arena.
In 2014, RHA featured an interview with Dr. Cugell in our observance marking 50 years since the U.S. Surgeon General report that first linked cigarettes to many health dangers.
As Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine’s longest serving faculty member at 58 years, Dr. Cugell published landmark papers on pulmonary physiology and occupational lung disease. In 1965, he was appointed as the first Chief of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, a position he held until 1982. He served as deputy editor of Chest from 1983 to 1993 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Medicine of Chicago.
Dr. Cugell recently celebrated more than 60 years of marriage to his wife, Dr. Christina Enroth-Cugell, Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology at Northwestern, who passed away this summer.
The RHA family is grateful for the tremendous impact Dr. Cugell made on our organization; his wisdom and counsel will be missed.
