Nursing Scholarships
Marybeyh Monaghen, ARDS Foundation, Nursing Assembly and Respiratory Health Association Graduate Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship
Purpose
The Marybeth Monaghen/ARDS Foundation/NA/RHAMC Graduate Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship was created in 2008 to promote advanced education of nursing practitioners and leaders specializing in acute and/or critical care. One nurse pursuing a master's degree in nursing, an advanced practice/nurse practitioner program, or a post-masters program, with a focus in acute and/or critical care will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship. Funds awarded are to be used for tuition assistance.
Qualification of Recipient
The recipient of this award must:- be a registered nurse.
- have a baccalaureate degree and be enrolled in a graduate nursing program, advanced practice/nurse practitioner certificate program, or doctor of nursing practice program (must already be an APN or also pursuing APN specialty).
- be specializing in acute and/or critical care.
- be a resident of Illinois.
- express interest in the objectives of Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, Nursing Assembly and/or ARDS Foundation.
NOTE: Anyone meeting the criteria, including NA committee chairpersons and officers, may apply.
Selection procedures
Scholarship applications will be reviewed by RHAMC staff for completeness and will be acknowledged as received. The applications will then be forwarded to the chairperson of the review committee to eliminate applicants who are ineligible. The remaining candidates will be reviewed and interviewed by a NA/RHAMC committee, which will make the final selection.
Deadline
The deadline for applications is September 15, 2010.
Obligations
The recipient may be interviewed for publicity purposes after the scholarship is awarded.
Short-term obligations include remaining in contact with the NA throughout the school year and providing enrollment and transcript information upon request. Scholarship recipient will be asked to be a guest at a Nursing Assembly meeting and will be introduced to the Nursing Assembly membership.
Long-term obligations include providing RHAMC with information concerning the recipient's professional career after graduation.
Scholarship recipients are encouraged to join the Nursing Assembly in order to further their professional development and to help Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago and/or ARDS Foundation achieve its goals.
About the scholarship
The Marybeth Monaghen/ARDS Foundation/NA/RHAMC Graduate Advanced Practice Nursing Scholarship is named in honor of Marybeth Monaghen who passed away because of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) in August 1998. She was a registered nurse, a daughter, a sister and a friend. This scholarship is to support the advanced educational pursuits of nursing practitioners that care for and treat patients with respiratory disease.
2009 recipients
Richard Baker. Richard is pursuing a Master of Science from Franciscan Skemp Healthcare: School of Nurse Anesthesia from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Margaret Corr. Margaret currently attends University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing and is pursuing the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree.
