Midwest COPD Network
On March 31, 2011, Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago was awarded nearly $90,000 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, to improve awareness and understanding of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
The award is part of the NHLBI's COPD Learn More Breathe Better campaign and is granted under the campaign's communications contract with Porter Novelli. Respiratory Health Association will use the funding to build a regional network in Illinois, Indiana Michigan and Ohio to increase the awareness and diagnosis of COPD and improve quality for life of people living with the disease.
Medical partners include representatives from Northwestern University, Medical Specialists of Indiana, University of Michigan, Henry Ford Hospital and the Ohio State University and the Ohio Department of Health. In addition, community partners include Walgreens and CBS Radio. The regional network will offer a series of formal activities aiming to raise awareness about signs and symptoms of COPD, promote early detection among at-risk individuals and promote proper COPD management among those who have been diagnosed with COPD.
The goals of this network are to:
- Develop a sustainable COPD regional network in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
- Increase the number of providers educated about COPD, signs and symptoms, treatment guidelines and the role of spirometry in early detection.
- Increase the number of diagnosed COPD patients who receive education about proper COPD management and treatment.
- Improve community awareness about the signs and symptoms and promote early detection of COPD.
