Understanding H1N1 (Swine) Flu
Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago has initiated a Pandemic Flu Awareness Program based on the concept that an informed and well-prepared public will be better equipped during a pandemic flu outbreak. This page is dedicated to information about H1N1 (Swine) Flu. For seasonal flu information, visit our Understanding Seasonal Influenza page.
What is H1N1 (Swine) Flu?
H1N1 is a respiratory virus that was first diagnosed in March 2009. The virus spreads from person to person when someone who is infected with the virus coughs or sneezes into the air. H1N1 was originally called "swine flu" because it was thought to be a strain of flu that pigs often have.
What is pandemic flu?
Pandemic flu is an influenza virus to which humans have little or no immunity. It spreads easily and rapidly and affects a large geographical area stretching around the world. The flu virus spreads from person to person, affecting all age groups and causes a worldwide outbreak. H1N1 was identified as a pandemic by the CDC in June 2009 because it has spread to more than 70 countries. However, pandemic status does not indicate the severity of the flu.
How is H1N1 different from seasonal flu?
Although seasonal flu typically strikes people over the age of 65 the hardest, H1N1 is mostly affecting people under 25. Still, anyone who comes into contact with the virus is at risk for infection. People who have asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive and neuromuscular disorders and women who are pregnant are at a higher risk of complications from either seasonal or H1N1 flu.
