Asthma Management for School Staff

TRAINING OVERVIEW:

Public Act 99-0843 requires the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to develop a model emergency response protocol and requires school districts to implement an emergency protocol by January 1, 2017. It also requires school staff who work with pupils to complete in-person or online training every two years.
The online training will provide Illinois school districts an opportunity to receive the required training to ensure compliance with Public Act 99-0843. This online training covers important content set forth in P.S. 99-0843 and in National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guidelines including: early recognition of asthma symptoms, common asthma triggers within schools, trigger avoidance strategies, proper inhaler use and descriptions of various asthma medications. This training also includes appropriate emergency response procedures within the schools and highlights Illinois polices that apply to asthma management in schools.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

  • Explain how to manage asthma in a school setting
  • Identify asthma triggers and how to prevent asthma symptoms in a school-setting
  • Recognize asthma medication and proper inhaler technique
  • Recognize asthma warning signs and how to respond during an asthma emergency

TRAINING AUDIENCE:

This training is intended for all school staff including administrators, school nurses, classroom teachers, case managers, counselors, health clerks, physical education teachers, health teachers, office clerks, etc.
